AHMEDABAD: Kankaria lake seems to have been a major draw during vacation time. Visitors flocked here between mid-April and May while authorities raked in the moolah. Footfalls and collections in May were nearly double that in March and April.
Around 6.94 lakh people visited Kankaria in May while the figure for March was 3.87 lakh. Heat and exams were major deterrents in March.
The holiday season attracted many families who spent the day at the zoo or Nagina Vadi garden and enjoyed the beautiful sunset later.
Many were seen enjoying rides on the train, Kankaria Queen, and boats or just lazing around and chatting with friends and family. Chirping birds and greenery make it an ideal picnic spot. The illuminated lake at night is also a sight people come here for.
Says resident of Ghoda Circle Deval Modi, "I usually come here for a morning walk as I like the calm atmosphere. On weekends, I'm here with family as this is a perfect place for a family outing or get-together. Apart from the pleasing view, there's good food available too."
First-time visitor and Kuber Nagar resident Vijay Bhagchandani, 30, says, "This is my first visit and I find the place very beautiful. I intend on taking my kids on a boat ride and will definitely visit again."
Security personnel Ajay Sharma, 24, says, "Around 500 people visit everyday. The numbers are higher on weekends. Prime time is 6 pm to 11 pm and the laser show is a major attraction."
The makeover Kankaria lake has received has made it one of the most scenic spots in the city. Not only has it become a popular hangout for Amdavadis, but also a cash cow for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
